The Ghana Institute of Management Express Concern On The Gas Explosion at Atomic Junction
The Ghana Institute of Management (GIM) would like to share in the grieve and pains of the families & loved ones who lost their lives and property as well as those who are wounded, and for the rest of their lives would carry such horrified memories about the gas explosion at the atomic junction on Oct 9, 2017.
The continuous events of gas explosions and fire disasters at our petrol and gas filling stations can no longer be allowed to continue. As a nation and a people, we must hold as a high priority, the lives of our citizens. It should be our number one priority. We cannot continue to watch, as our brothers and sister, mothers and fathers as well as Children continue to lose their lives due to professional negligence on the part of Officers who have the responsibility to manage Institutions of such high risks. We abhor the display of unprofessionalism, lack of attention to details and disregard for matters of health and safety.
We of the GIM, call on the Government, the Environmental Protection Agency, National Petroleum Authority, Food and Drugs Authority, Ghana Standards Authority, Ghana National Fire Service and all other bodies mandated by law to ensure the adherence of high standards at all high risk areas of our economy (food, petrochemical, pharmaceutical Industries etc.) We would mention that, when you go to ‘sleep’ and do not ensure that these high standards are adhered to, not only would we record deaths at our petrol and gas filling stations, but in our homes due to the poor quality of electrical gadgets and cables that are sold in the open market to unsuspecting citizens.
We therefore recommend the following:
1. That a full scale investigation is conducted on the actual cause of the explosion.
2. That corrective measures are put in place to forestall future occurrences.
3. That regular and mandatory training is instituted for all persons working at fuel and gas stations.
4. That Parliament passes a law regulating the sighting of fuel and gas stations among others.
5. That appropriate anti fire systems are installed at all gas and petrol filling stations (sprinklers, water hydrant, smoke alarm systems etc.)
6. That those who break the existing laws & regulations are severely punished to serve as deterrent to others.
