The Anlo State Anthem

Fia Sri II, Ƒe Nuxlɔamenyawo de yevugbe mɛ

Widespread crime and insecurity of life came with the establishment and consolidation of Anlo State and this called for the institution of stringent measures and at times, severe and seemingly outrageous punishments for crimes committed by the citizens. The leaders believed that the strict adherence to traditional practices and customs unified the state and showered blessings on its land and people. For the preservation of the uniqueness and spirituality of the state, Fia Sri II gave the famous speech which became the pledge of the state. This pledge became the measuring rod for uprightness of the people. He said “Never forget that criminals are nation wreckers Parents must reprimand their children when they go wrong and bring them up in all righteousness. The State belonged to the children, elders lived for only today and are gone the following day. Parents must set their children on the right path to prosperity and of the state, through strength, love and bravery. Obedient children are ornaments to their parents and the state and can be compared to sapphires, corals, pearls and gold and must be regarded as adornment of the state. This knowledge has prospered the State and is the joy of after-life. One who lives well is an asset to the State. Recalcitrant children must be made to repent and make their lives conform to the norm. Debtors must be admonished and should be made to refrain from greed Liars should learn to speak the truth. Begging must be frowned upon and it is the responsibility of every family member or the community to look after the physically challenged person and the begging culture must become a taboo in our land. Thieves, jealousness and saboteurs had no stake in the wealth of the state, and such people shall never live peacefully unless they reform. Therefore, any citizen who refused to conform shall find his place at the Fifth Landing Stage”. These proclamations of Fia Sri II made to his people made them uphold its tenets and to abhor crime preferring good name to tainted riches. They believed that what Fia Sri II said was spiritual and a covenant between them and God and falling foul meant, shame and destruction of one’s future or fate. Therefore in offices and other work places, the people did not play with their integrity. Further to instil love of the land, everyone was taught the state anthem and to pray for their awaomefia. The anthem God bless our King. He led us from “Hogbe”. Give a shout of joy, O you “Kotsiblagbo”. Our beloved Homeland, I will extol your name throughout my life. I shall never forsake you. You King of the valiants, we give you honour. A single faggot has cooked the meal. God bless our king. Let the enemies fail. Have faith in him and never be afraid.
