13th Sunday in ordinary time, June 30, 2013 Rev. Bro. Pius

1. Elisha a richman left all he had to follow Elijah
2. In the Gospel we hear of Christ who was rejected in Samaria because He was going to Jerusalem. Take note of Samaritan story
3. The key word is that once we put our hand to plough – I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back.
4. So we listen to His word
5. A Christian is a person who has the invitation of Christ & has responded to the call & sits the feet & listen to Christ & let the Word become flesh in us.
6. 5 parts of the Catholic Liturgy
7. 1st part Introductory Rite
8. 2nd the Liturgy of the Word.
9. How did the Church get the Liturgy of the Word.
10. It came from the great commission – go & proclaim the Good News.
11. When Chist was with them they went to the temple, but when He was leaving, He told them that when they meet they should break Bread in His memory. So there was confusion. So they decided that they will go to the temple & go listen to the Word & come back to break Bread.
12. The is the story of the cripple at the golden gate & Peter & John – Silver & gold I have not in the name of Jesus stand up & walk
13. Peter & John were imprisoned & later they were banished from the temple & asked not to mention the name of Jesus. But they said that the name of Jesus they will not stop mentioning, but the temple they will not come. So gave birth to the Liturgy of the Word. When they met at home to break bread, they read the Word.
14. On the journey to Emaus Christ appeared & started teaching them from Genisis & thought them about the Messiah. When the got home & He broke the Bread their eyes opened. So we get structure of the mass.
15. So after the the homily we should sit quietly & reflect. It norishes our faith, renews, go out & share
16. The tomb out of which the living word comes out is the Ambo – it involves the people, the lay faithful. The lay faithful who proclaim the word should be in the state of Grace. The reading is the Ministry of the Word, for as they proclaim the Word, they become a mouth piece of God.
17. We have 3 readings, the Old Testament, the people who did not see Christ. The 1st reading helps us to understand the Gospel. The 2nd reading helps elucidate our thoughts.
18. Every Catholic is to read all the readings from Thursday to Saturday reflect on them.
19. The Psalms are to be chanted
20. The 2nd reading might not have any relations between the 1st & Gospel especially in Ordinary Time.
21. Gospel is the highest point of the Liturgy. The alleluia – All are to sing it. The Alleluia verse is an invitation for the priest to proclaim the Word of Christ. The incense is used to give honour to the Word of God. After the Gospel we need to all respond – Praise be to you Lord Jesus Christ.
22. After the Homily we need to sit quietly & reflect. It is mandatory
23. After that we proclaim our Faith.
24. The prayer of the Faithful is when the people take their priestly place & it should be done at the Ambo. We need to invite the all faithful part in the prayer by pausing for them to individually pray.
LITURGY OF THE WORD
FIRST READING
1 Kings 19:16b, 19–21
The LORD said to Elijah:
“You shall anoint Elisha, son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah, as prophet to succeed you.” Elijah set out and came upon Elisha, son of Shaphat, as he was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen; he was following the twelfth. Elijah went over to him and threw his cloak over him. Elisha left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, “Please, let me kiss my father and mother goodbye, and I will follow you.” Elijah answered, “Go back! Have I done anything to you?” Elisha left him, and taking the yoke of oxen, slaughtered them; he used the plowing equipment for fuel to boil their flesh, and gave it to his people to eat. Then Elisha left and followed Elijah as his attendant.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM
Psalm 16:1–2, 5, 7–8, 9–10, 11 (see 5a)
R. You are my inheritance, O Lord.
Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge; I say to the LORD, “My LORD are you.” O Lord, my allotted portion and my cup, you it is who hold fast my lot.
R. You are my inheritance, O Lord.
I bless the LORD who counsels me; even in the night my heart exhorts me. I set the LORD ever before me; with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.
R. You are my inheritance, O Lord.
Therefore my heart is glad and my soul rejoices, my body, too, abides in confidence, because you will not abandon my soul to the netherworld, nor will you suffer your faithful one to undergo corruption.
R. You are my inheritance, O Lord.
You will show me the path to life, Fullness of joys in your presence, the delights at your right hand forever.
R. You are my inheritance, O Lord.
SECOND READING
Galatians 5:1, 13–18
Brothers and sisters:
For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.
For you were called for freedom, brothers and sisters. But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather, serve one another through love. For the whole law is fulfilled in one statement, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you go on biting and devouring one another, beware that you are not consumed by one another.
I say, then: live by the Spirit and you will certainly not gratify the desire of the flesh. For the flesh has desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you may not do what you want. But if you are guided by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
ALLELUIA
1 Samuel; 3:9; John 6:68c
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Speak, Lord, your servant is listening; you have the words of everlasting life.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
GOSPEL
Luke 9:51–62
When the days for Jesus’ being taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem, and he sent messengers ahead of him. On the way they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his reception there, but they would not welcome him because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem. When the disciples James and John saw this they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?” Jesus turned and rebuked them, and they journeyed to another village.
As they were proceeding on their journey someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus answered him, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” And to another he said, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, let me go first and bury my father.” But he answered him, “Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
And another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say farewell to my family at home.” To him Jesus said, “No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God.”

Beautiful reflection. Mine in a nut shell is fine we should leave aside tradition, i.e. what we are always used to and with Faith rise up to the call whenever God calls us. God is always our portion. Miss you all and God bless.
