Ing. Kenneth Ashigbey pushes for legislation to regulate activities of project managers

Speaking on a Panel discussion at the 2019 Project Management Awards

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunication, Kenneth Ashigbey has advocated for legislation to regulate project management practitioners in the country, ABC News can report.

The legislation, he proposed, must ensure a robust regulatory system that will require all project managers to undergo certification before they can be recognised as professionals.

That, in his view, would deepen professionalism in the sector, reduce cases of poorly executed projects and support better project management practices, particularly, in the public sector.

Mr Ashigbey, who is also a certified engineer and a project management practitioner made the call at the maiden Project Management Awards in Accra last Saturday.

“We need to start pushing for legislation that should go to parliament and would expect that before you start handling projects to some particular level, you need to have gone through some certification and be able to demonstrate that there is some work that you should have done to justify your capability.

“You cannot just get up and say you are a doctor when you don’t belong to a grouping and have not been certified. The lawyers also do it. We need to get to that particular point. As we start holding ourselves accountable, we need to also push for the certification of project managers,” he said.

In spite of the absence of legislation, Mr Ashigbey underscored the need for professional groupings in the project management industry to develop a code of ethics for practitioners to uplift standards and protect the image of the profession.

He also encouraged project management practitioners to embrace change and take advantage of technology to enhance their skills to guarantee their relevance in the sector in future.

“We need to hold ourselves accountable to the profession, first with the issue of ethics and ensure that we evaluate ourselves as critically as possible. It is also important for the professional groupings to take centre stage of what is happening and ensuring that our people are living with the ethics of the profession,“
