Apsu Kobby Asmah named as Daily Graphic Editor

Apsu Kobby Asmah

This piece was put together and shared on Facebook by another Apsu scribe Peter Agbeko, Kobby happens to be my senior in St. Augustines College and Prince of Peace International School and I worked with him when was at GCGL.

The former political editor of the Graphic Communications Group Ltd (GCGL), Kobby Asmah is the Daily Graphic’s new editor, a statement from the organisation has confirmed. Daily Graphic is the nation’s largest newspaper and in terms of influence leads the pack.

Kobby, became political editor at GCGL in November 2007, after having worked on the foreign desk and other areas in the newsroom for many years.

He joined the organisation in 1990. He is a Chevening Scholar (Chevener) and also an alumnus of the Ghana Institute of Journalism, Indian Institute of Mass Communication and University of Wales, Cardiff, UK.

The Chevening Scholarship is an international scholarship scheme which enables students with leadership qualities from over 160 countries and territories to undertake postgraduate study or courses in universities in the United Kingdom.

“Kobby has a very impressive track record as a journalist, political editor and general assignment reporter,” said Peter Agbeko, a professional colleague and classmate from St. Augustine’s College in Cape Coast (Augusco) and at the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) in Accra.

“He is a very level-headed chap and professional in his work”, notes Edmond Asamoah-Twum, another school mate from GIJ”.

Kobby and Peter were part of the team of journalists sent to Rwanda by The United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR) to cover the genocide, in 1994.

UNAMIR was created by the United Nations Security Council in October 1993. This was just after the end of the Rwandan Civil War. Its goals were to help put a peace agreement into place, monitor how well it was going, and support the new government.

Kobby, who is a member of the APSU class of 1980, had his primary education at Prince of Peace International School in Accra and continued at Augusco, where he was an active member of the school cadet. He rose to the rank of Senior Sergeant.

Interestingly, Kobby, like some of his APSU mates, including Peter Agbeko, started off as science students before switching to the liberal arts.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s house where he earned the nickname (Asama).

He has practised journalism for more than 27 years and has won a number of awards, including the Ghana Journalist Association’s, Political Reporter Award.

Kobby took up his new role on September 1, 2019.
