GCGL Managing Director Visits KNUST
The newly appointed Managing Director of the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), Mr. Kenneth Ashigbey, an Alumnus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), who pursued Bsc. Electrical Engineering in 1965, has paid a special courtesy call on the University management. The working day visit was to pay homage to his alma matar, an Institution which has moulded him into who he is today; academically and socially.
As part of the official visit, KNUST and GCGL discussed the way forward for better collaboration to contribute to national development. Mr. Ashigbey stated that KNUST has a pool of experts in most critical areas of national development and encouraged faculty members at KNUST to become columnists in the National Dailies. This, he said, which will enrich content and give more and better information to the public on topical issues.
Mr. Ashigbey conceded that technological advances have been tremendous to the extent that establishments like the GCGL seem to be struggling with equipment handling. He therefore proposed collaboration between KNUST (the premier University in technological developments) and the GCGLto train personnel to be abreast of advancements. He said his organisation is also considering establishing a school for practical training in publishing technologies to be affiliated to KNUST. He expressed the hope of a cordial working relationship between the two Institutions.
In a response, Professor W.O. Ellis, the Vice-Chancellor, revealed that in order to establish a better partnership with the media in Kumasi, the University has been organising media soiree to discuss ways to uplift the image of the University and Ghana through better coverage. He advised journalists to adopt a style that prioritises developmental issues. He stated that Oxford and Cambridge Universities are prominent because of roles played by the media.
Professor Ellis tasked the media to prompt Faculty members in advance when inviting them to contribute to national issues. This will greatly enrich media content since contributors to discussions are professionals or experts in the field.
On his part, Professor Peter Donkor, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, challenged the GCGL to promote unity and development. He also advised management of GCGL to consider simultaneous printing in all ten regions to facilitate easy dissemination and accessibility of the newspaper and its auxcillairies.
Mr. Kobby Yebo Okrah, the Registrar disclosed that there is a partnership between United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisations (UNESCO) and KNUST to put up a publishing house on Campus and said the GCGL could partner KNUST in tailoring market and demand driven programmes. He also wished that there would be regular meetings between the two Institutions to deliberate on issues of development.
The Principal Officers of KNUST congratulated Mr. Ashigbey on his new appointment and presented him with a University Plaque
