Koforidua prison unable to account for 10 ‘galamsey’ suspects
I pray that the Minister of Interior under whose jurisdiction the Ghana Police and the Ghana Prison Service work should ask the heads of these two institutions to account for these 10 galamsey suspects. Yes we have challenges with the justice delivery system for which the Media Coalition Against Galamsey has petitioned the Her Ladyship the Chief Justice and the Hon AG and we are still yet to hear from the AG. To compound the problem, the Prisons are also becoming another weak link in the #StopGalamsey fight. We thank JoyFm for uncovering this story and I hope they and other media houses will stay on this beat till we find these 10 suspects and also punish whoever has done wrong. We are watching and we hope we will get some good news – please read on what myjoyonline revealed.
The Koforidua Prison could not account for ten suspects remanded by a circuit court for defying the nationwide ban on small-scale mining when JoyNews visited.
Thirty-two suspects were picked up by the Small Scale Miners Association taskforce after two weeks of swoops in eight mining communities in the region.
The court granted bail to eight of the suspects, remanding twenty-four to prison custody.
But checks by JoyNews at the Koforidua prison reveal the ‘galamsey’ suspects were ten short of the number.Warden of the Prison who was infuriated by cameras at the penitentiary told JoyNews to go seek for an explanation from the Police about the missing illegal mining suspects.
Commander of the task force who was angered by the revelation lamented about the development.
