Thanking God once again for seeing me through those unforgettable moments exactly a year ago when I got involved in an accident on my way to Kumasi.

There are a few behind the scene points, notes and lessons I would love to share here before, during and after the accident:

Before:

Condition Of Car:

A week prior to this journey, I had surrounded my car to my mechanic for servicing. I told him the car experiences some form of screeching as well as a left and right movement of the car when i suddenly apply the breaks. I tasked him to check the tyres too although everything seemed okay on the surface.

His report back to me was like he didn’t find any issue as complained but all is well and he had even conducted a wheel alignment on the vehicle. He thereby gave clearance for me to embark on the anticipated journey.

Preparation For Journey:

It was my intention to drive straight to Kumasi in the evening after close from work.

A national service personal from my office and another family friend expressed desire to join me on this fateful journey.

Somehow for some reasons these two people could not be part of the trip.

This was not my first time travelling with my car regarding Apsu functions or any other program outside of Accra.

The day was Friday after 5pm when I drove straight home to park a few clothing into my bag prior to departure and that was past 6pm.

While parking a call came through from my good friend Sylvia Osei to meet her on an issue on my way home from work. I told her am already home preparing for a trip.

The whole drama and mystery surrounding this journey started when she asked if I intend to drive that night and I responded affirmatively. She immediately expressed worry about this idea of closing from work tired and straight away travelling on a night drive. She instead advised that I go by air or resort to the VIP transport service but I still stuck to my plan and wished me save journey.

The next to happen was when I had gone to buy the usual tooth brush, paste, soap etc at a nearby store when my own Edem Ashigbi (MD Graphic) called me on phone to ask if I had already taken off as almost everybody had arrived safely in Kumasi. He learned then from me that am yet to take off and driving as well to Kumasi.

From the feel of Ken Ashigbi’s voice was someone a bit uncomfortable with the decision and therefore his immediate reaction was more of a no to my intended action. He advised that I pick the VIP transport as almost everybody had arrived with lots of cars available to accommodate me on the return journey.

What Is Happening:

With these expressions from these personalities, I began to wonder what was happening. Never had I embarked on any journey outside of Accra to get people expressing reservations before and so why now was a question I asked the ladies in the shop.

My explanation for insisting on driving there was to enable me make errands personally to all the different places I once stayed and schooled as a kid in Kumasi in the 70s for old memories sake.

In order to assuage whatever reservations they had expressed, I resolved as a mitigating measure, to call Ken and Sylvia to tell them i will rather rest for the night and make the trip at dawn 4 30 am that fateful day.

I recall I set my alarm clock to wake me at 3 00 am but I somehow overslept and woke at 4 00 am. Despite that I managed to get ready for the journey by 4 40 am.

Hmm I remember vividly well that just after I closed the house gate and entered the car for the take off, it just hit me again about something not right about this trip. I did my short prayer and said to myself ‘God will see me through’.

That very moment although I felt like am going to be fine despite the intuition being experienced, I resolved to send a WhatsApp message to my brother informing him about the trip as part of my precautionary measures. I took off and got his okay response when I got onto the N1 highway. All went very well and the by the time I got to Nsawam, it was almost daybreak.

The Unexpected But Not Surprised Happens:

5.-Hustee-at-Speechday Hustee Shares his testimony of God's favorI drove and got to a toll booth which I later found to be just about probably 7 minutes drive to New Jejeti, a town which is 5 km before Nkawkaw.

After effecting payment at the booth I saw myself driving normally behind a number of vehicles until the unexpected met me.

All I recall was that the vehicle in front of me had suddenly slowed down and I got compelled to do same only to experience that screeching and skidding thing I made mention in my intro. This was when for the first time in my life I experienced a typical clear and present danger. It was more like a movie playing right before me as my car kept skidding and screeching in that kind of zigzag manner all over the road.

Hmm, I remember telling myself ‘wow this it, I’ve lost control of my car’. I could see all the cars ahead trying as much as possible to distant theirs from mine. My resolve at that moment was to hold on fast to control the car to mitigate the extent of damage and injury that was inevitably about to occur. My blessing and also thanks to my Guardian Angel was that there were no oncoming vehicles from the opposite end of the road.

Finally all that I realised was the car now turning opposite the driveway and this was when the somersault occurred. I could now see and experience myself bouncing here and there in the car until it landed upside down by the side of the road.

Hmm it was then that I realised that it’s all over and am still alive. I needed to quickly get off the car if possible as I could smell and see smoke emanating from the bonnet and sweeping through the dashboard area. I tried the door and noticed it had opened, so I attempted to make a move out of the car but got held down by the seatbelt.

At this juncture I could now see lots and lots of vehicles coming to a stop with people rushing across the street towards me. Some men helped me out and one of them held me and started asking questions if I can see him, if I feel okay etc. They then resolved to overturn the car to access the bonnet with the aim of disabling the battery once they realized I was out of immediate danger.

Hmm it was at that point that I realised the battery is rather kept in the booth. The only access to the booth is my ignition key but unfortunately they found that it had also broken into the keyhole. They were left with no other option than to fight in whatever means to stop the ‘ smouldering fire kind of situation’. Thank God they managed to clear the danger. I was advised to get the police close by informed about the situation and also visit the hospital at Nkawkaw. Everybody left me at the scene except a farmer and his son who stayed by me while I was thinking about what next to do.

The Coming Surprising, Intriguing And Funny Happenings Thereafter:

Hmm, a few events happened from when I managed to chance on a tow vehicle to help me move my car to the police station:

Just as they were about to move my car, he experienced a fuel shortage. They got a gallon of diesel from a nearby town to pour into the truck.

Hmm, just as they were about to move, it developed another fault and so we had to wait for mechanics to resolve it. The police joined me in waiting for repair works to be completed on this truck for close to 4 hours until completion.

So although the accident happened around 6 am, we got my car finally at the New Jejeti police station after 11am. By then one of my Apsu colleagues had joined to accompany me to the Nkawkaw hospital after I had given my statement. I received treatment and I joined my colleagues in Kumasi to take part in the program we planned to undertake.

Hmm, the following day Sunday I joined Ken Ashigbi and others from Kumasi to the police station to plan the possibility of getting my car towed back to Accra. We chanced on this same tow truck which had not too long ago brought in a stolen Mercedes Benz to the police station. The police recommended we allow this truck to tow my car to Accra.

This truck was just about to reverse for my car to be placed on it, only for it to develop another fault where it was unable to reverse. It took them more than an hour for the issue to be resolved where by then we had almost given up and resolved to contact a tow truck to come all the way from Accra to help with situation.

My colleagues and I moved ahead of the tow truck and just at the time we reached Nsawam, this LT passenger vehicle grazed the front bumper of the vehicle Ken was driving in, which included some of my colleagues and me. We got down and examined the situation and realised the damage was not that serious and the driver pleaded for the trouble he had brought on us.

By this time I had began thinking and questioning the unfolding events.

Hmm, I thought this was the end and only for Ken’s car to slightly take a hit at an embarkment when we had reached Accra where he wanted to use an ATM machine. I began to cringe inside me and wondering and feeling sorry about the trouble brought on Ken’s car.

We somehow parted company and I recall Sylvia Osei who is a senior nurse by profession asked that I report straight to her home whiles I wait for the arrival of the tow truck in Accra.

Hmm when the truck got to Accra, another incident happened where at this juncture it felt funny to me where they were finding it hard to dislodge my car from the truck at the designated repair shop. It took them close to an hour for them to disentangle some heavy chains strapped around my four tyres. I took an Uber and got home finally to take the needed rest for what looked like a very long weekend.

The Following Day Monday:

The following morning and as advised by many, I visited the SSNIT hospital in Dansoman for further medical examination. The medical officer in charge referred me to the main hospital in OSU for a chest scan and examination.

Hmm, I thought Monday brings me an entirely new day devoid of the weekend ‘nightmares’ but only to experience another unexpected experience. I joined an Uber vehicle from Dansoman on my way to Osu and just as we got to Zongo junction, all I could see was that this driver was driving too close to the taxi ahead. But my mind game was more like this driver will eventually slow down. To my utter surprise he went straight to hit the back of the taxi ahead! I went numb and speechless. I then asked him whether he is tired from a lack of rest or what but surprisingly he said I happened to be his first client for the day. For our trouble I paid some money to the taxi driver to get the damage worked on.

After the medical examination I got into another Uber car and it was at this point I began to get a bit emotional about the sequence of unfortunate events I had found myself embroiled in since Friday evening. I was frantically looking out for an outlet to pour out my emotional pain as it felt too much for me. I found solace in this taxi driver who quietly and curiously listened and consoled me as we drove on.

I remember telling him to be careful with the driving because of the unfolding events. We had gotten to Mamprobi post office area when this time around a seemingly funny incident happened where about five or so cattle from no where crossed our path. This time I began eventually to laugh over the situation when the driver stopped the car and patiently waited for these ‘troublesome’ animals to pass with their ‘trouble’. I could see him looking frozen in his seat especially when a black fat one moved closer to our car.

Eventually I got to my old lady who was anxiously waiting to see her son back to her in one peace. She expressed thanks to the almighty for bringing back her son. I couldn’t help it but to find my way to the washroom to shed a few tears.

I emphasize here that I was being prevented from embarking on this journey by my Guardian Angel but I refused to listen. These I believe were being executed through Ken and Sylvia but I tried somehow to listen by resting for the night and to drive during the day instead of the evening.

Hustee at Augusco

I attended church service on two different occasions with Ken and Sylvia to thank God for once again giving me the needed protection as I went through another dramatic chapter of my life. I will continue to adore Him for all the Guardian Angels that keep protecting me in most of my life situations till date. I fervently believe he will see me through to fulfill all the assigned task till end of my time in this wonderful world.

The hospital cleared me of any issue of internal bleeding or any other complications.

The car got repaired and a thorough examination on the car finally concluded and they laid blame on the vehicle tyres as a major cause of the accident. I immediately changed the entire set to brand new tyres. They further took me on a speed test to confirm their findings. I also resolved to maintain at least two mechanic shops to be handling my car.

In order to overcome any psychological challenge regarding any fear of driving again, I drove on different occasions to Tarkwa, Takoradi and the Aflao border to help regain my confidence.

I have also continued to still use the car because in my time of need, it did protect me under those trying moments.

Regarding any fear because of how all these events unfolded, I still believe there’s also a God who still gives us guidance and protection even under every difficult situation. These situations rather gives me more hope and confidence that once you maintain a clean heart, truthfulness and give out love, there is no way the good lord will abandon you in times of trouble.

It’s with thanks and praise I give to the Almighty Father for the abundance of grace He showers on me at every moment of my life.

Finally much thanks also goes to our president Kenneth Ashigbey (MD Graphic Communication Group), the rest of my mates, my family, work mates and the numerous friends who in one way or the other prayed with me and given all the much needed motivation that has kept me up till now.

God indeed has been good to me.

This ‘boy’ Hustee’s entire life is a whole testimony, besides this accident incident.

Like an thlete with a late start, he has outran the race of life and has made what seemed impossible possible.

A celebrated guru in communication design yet to be introduces to the world.

This guy, like Pozo, made my Augusco days a memorable one in St. Teresa’s House.

I join you in thanksgiving to God, for delivering you from this accident.

Hustee shall live and see his great great grand children.
Amen
