Celebrating Ghana @ 60 is a must, the questions is how do we observe it to be meaningful
There has been a lot of noice about the need to celebrate or not to celebrate the diamond jubilee of our nationhood. In the media traditional and social media, there has been a lot of discussions on the issues. So I took to social media with this post.
Some of us, including some of my siblings in the media, are criticising the celebration of the Ghana@60 without asking for the details of the celebrations.
What is the basis of this criticism? It is just for the sake of criticizing..
I agree with the President when he says it is worth celebrating & worth reflecting upon. We will and should hold him to his word after all that is what the constitution ask us the 4th Estate to do.
It is great that the opportunity is being offered to Corporate Ghana to fund it. It should be structured such that those who sow bountifully will reap bountifully from associating with the Ghana@ 60 Celebrations.
Also there should be great transparency and accountability.
Ghana@ 60 Celebrations could address the Challenge of National Reconciliation, Patriotisms, Poverty, Sanitation etc.
One of the dividends of the Ghana @ 50 are the jubilee parks and that is still in use.
We could also use the celebration to build some small village water systems or provide other critical needs that the deprived in Ghana needs most.
So I guess we should rather talk about the content of the celebrations rather than say we should not celebrate.
We all need to educate ourselves 60th Anniversary is a diamond jubilee.
This is my small mind on the issue.
These are some of the comments of my friends on social media.
Felix Xedra Agbenyo Yes, some of the criticism just lose the base. Some are just too immature. However,I taught there should have been a committee of education working even before the yesterday’s unveiling. More people will understand n appreciate the reason, what does into the celebration, sources of funding ,etc as we inch towards the d-day
My nephew Stan Xoese Dogbe comments and asked some questions “Good.
So, what is the content/ programme for the celebration? The media has not provided the public with the details except the projected cost of the celebration.
Then Kofi Owusu my colleague at JoyFm asked a question that also got some responses. Read along
A Kofi Owusu Pozo, I don’t have a position on whether to celebrate 60 years or not. But can’t we go ahead and build all those projects without all the fanfare?
Stephen Debrah Asamoah Snr A Kofi Owusu one of the means to get those projects executed via private funds is through such funfair that gives them some publicity. I dont think its in a bad taste.
Patrick Dziekpor Yes! That is only if our priorities are well recognised and appreciated as a nation. Bra. Kofi.
A Kofi Owusu Stephen Debrah Asamoah that may well be so. But I guess the skepticism is driven by the fear of some public officials falling into temptations.
Stephen Debrah Asamoah That can also not be totally ignored until the leadership has proven to us and we espereince it over and over. Hahahah
Edem Ashigbi But Kofi what is wrong with some fan fare, for me it will be how much fun fare. There should be a lot more reflection than fanfare
All that my counsel Opoku Agyei said was “Great”.
Citizen Ossei They is absolutely nothing to celebrate @60,Boss…..The entire celebration is a misplaced priority……Absolutely needless, reckless and infantile….Sorry for the words used, but it is what it is….
Kwame Kekeli Bokpe JP But $5 million or Ghc 20/million is an outrageous sum for the event. Schools are collapsing and killing people, we don’t have funds to fix but can afford that amount for celebrations. This isn’t impressive at all.
George Folley A, disappointed
Atta Kodom Boss hope they dont come for contracts n etc from the g’vot?
Benjamin Nii Martey Botchway Boss I may disagree with you on this. I believe we should take a cue from our Tanzania brothers and sisters.
Looking at what President John Magufuli has done with Tanzania, I don’t think it should be too much of a task for us here. Unfortunately, our l…See more
Citizen Ossei Bless u….
Kofi Sarfo Have folks really studied Tanzania and the state of Tanzania today after all the populist Mangufuli initiatives ??? Governance is more that populist one off show !!
Edem Ashigbi That is the beauty of democracy we are have our views. But Nii Martey Botchway did you read my post? I am not sure you did. We need to deal with both the hard issues & soft ones.
All I am asking for is that we should look into the content of our celebration & decide on things that will help us have a modest & reflective celebration.
However functional monuments are important
Benjamin Nii Martey Botchway Well said boss
On whats app one of my class mate in the Electrical Engineering class, his father a presidential candidate of the NPP had this to say. “Serious reflections maybe but I see Ghana as a complete and total failure! Are we celebrating the fact that we are no 2 in open defecation globally or that 60 years after we declared ourselves capable we still rely on our colonial masters renamed development partners to feed our own children via a school feeding program where majority of the funds are diverted? Give me a break!! “
He continued by saying “I see it as a 60 year old that still wets he/her bed insisting on celebrating that he/she turned 60!”
