Lessons From The Maestro Abedi Ayew Pele – Anthony Baidoo

Undoubtedly Abedi Pele is one of the most influential football players Ghana has ever produced. French league and cup double winner with Marseille in 1989, 1990,1991 and 1992. He is also a multiple winner of CAF African Player of the year, the last one being in 1992. Winner of UEFA Champions league with Marseille in 1993.

Notwithstanding the fact that he never played in the world cup, he was among the FIFA 100 greatest living footballers list released during the 100 anniversary of FIFA in 2004. He however was part of the Black Stars team that won the 1982 AFCON in Libya.

Lesson 1

Humble beginning does not mean humble end: some years back when Mr. & Mrs Ayew left Paga, a village in Upper East Region of Ghana to Oko a town near Accra, little did they know that one day their son was going to be a football legend. The future is so uncertain that we cannot afford not to allow our children to dream. We need to provide a good environment as a nation for our children to be at liberty to dream and pursue their dreams. As a student of Greenhills Abedi exhibited his skills right from childhood was allowed to demonstrate his skills and talent right from childhood.

Lesson 2

Pursue your passion: Abedi used to play football bare footed to entertain the people of Oko. He took his football obsession further by signing for some of the local teams then to feature prominently. Until you pursue your passion you will never achieve anything meaningful.

Lesson 3

Disciple and grow others in your chosen field: Not only did Abedi succeed in his football career, he even more importantly succeeded in training his sons to take after him. It is one of the greatest weakness of Ghanaians, we are unable to get continutity of enterprises. Most forebears are unable to continue what the vision bearer builds. We do not have trans-generational businesses and organizations. Thank God we are beginning to see a few, Mechanical Lloyd and Abedi is another example.

All your great ideas should not go with you into your grave when you die because it is not needed there. Pass it on to the next generation by training others. The maestro Abedi Pele could not lead the Black Stars to win the African cup in 1992 yet it is possible he leads the team in his two sons Andre & Jordan Ayew in 2015.
