Inooro TV Journalist Recounts Near-Death Beating From Matatu Touts

Inooro TV reporter Frederick Muitiriri took to Facebook to narrate how he almost died in the hands of a rogue matatu crew.

Muitiriri explained that he was on his way from Meru and when the crew of the matatu he was travelling in attempted to carry passengers in excess, he stood firm and declined the move. The issue angered the tout, the driver and even to his shock, the other passengers.

One time I was coming from Meru in a matatu. As usual, they wanted to carry four people per seat. The policeman in me turned down the request of having any forth passenger from boarding. It was late in the night, the passengers plus conductor and the driver were furious with me,” Miutiriri stated.

When they got to a nearby roadblock, he insisted on talking to the police, but the driver refused to stop even after he had been asked to stop by the officers.

According to the journalist, upon reaching Mwea, the crew drove into a petrol station and at this point, they were so incensed.

Together with the passengers, the crew forced him out of the vehicle gave him a merciless beating.

He stated that the vehicle drove off after the petrol station attendants came to his rescue leaving him in in the town.

“Eventually, we arrived in Mwea. The crew drove into a petrol station, by this time everyone is breathing fire, I was almost lynched. I was bungled out of the matatu, beaten up and left at the petrol station. In fact, I was saved by the petrol station attendants. I never tried that again,” he added.

He also stated that after refusing to stop at the roadblock, police chased the vehicle but it disappeared into a remote location and outmanoeuvred the security officers.
