Operation Vanguard ask for a redirection of attention in the #StopGalamsey
Operation Vanguard has released a video educating us of their work and sharing data on arrest made, prosecutions, seizures and destructions of equipment involved in the galamsey activities. It makes for very interesting viewing and shows some of the challenges they have to confront in doing their work.
This is a war, there have been some battles won and some lost. So far out of the 2,619 arrests made by Operation Vanguard since inception only 145 convictions have been made, this represents a paltry 5.54%.
This has to change, I am sure it will be very demotivating for the Operation Vanguard team who have sacrifice their very lives to fight this menance. Even if we the justice delivery system had successfully convicted at least 50% of those arrested I am sure we will have made more progress. Now there is an amendment to the Minerals and Mining act, but if we still fail to prosecute and convict those arrested, if the investigators do not do a good job and the prosecutors do not get a good brief or they do not do a good job. Then the new law as amended will not mean much
We need the support of all Ghanaians to win the entire war.
The Commander makes some profound statement, that require our attention.
He says that we need to redirect our attention to the source of the problem, it is about time that we go after the big players who are financing the galamsey.
s said if you want to kill a snake you should cut its head.
He has asked that we interrupt the importation and distribution of chamfangs which are responsible for the pollution of the water bodies.
