Cops identify suspects in reporter’s death

February 6, 2019 – Police in Kratie province’s Snuol district has identified suspects in the murder of a local journalist who was beaten to death by a group of people in Pi Thnou commune on Monday.

Captain Khiev Buntha, commune police chief, yesterday said that district police officials identified the suspects after interviewing two friends who were with BTBP TV Online journalist Sorn Sithy, 18, during the attack.

“After questioning the victim’s friends, we have now identified some suspects,” Cap Buntha said. “Now our police officers are working hard to continue the investigation.”

He noted that the two friends had told police that the group who attacked them came on four motorbikes.

Mr Sithy was killed by a group of people while returning from a wedding party with the two friends in the district on Monday.

Colonel Chan Sok Kim, district police chief, on Monday said that shortly after midnight, the victim and his friends were riding on a motorbike after leaving the dance party in the district’s Pi Thnou commune to go to their homes in Snuol commune.

Col Sok Kim noted that Mr Sithy was seated at the back.

He said that after they had travelled about three kilometres, the three were ambushed by a group of men who attacked them, causing Mr Sithy to fall off the motorbike.

Col Sok Kim noted that the two friends drove off to escape the attackers.

“A group of people attacked them and Mr Sithy fell down from the motorbike,” he said. “They then kept hitting the victim, including with a stone, until he died.”

Sem Diya, BTBP TV Online publisher, yesterday said that police informed him that the investigation into the case was now about 40 percent complete.

“District police officers questioned many people in relation to the case,” he said. “I hope that our police officials will find the perpetrators and take them to court.”
