Bernard Avle lists 10 things Ghana must tackle to improve lives

This is a speech that moved me close to tears. Oh Ghana we need to change a lot of to transform our nation. It starts with me and then you. We all need to do our bit. Bernard Koku Avle killed it for me. He said all the relevant things that ought to be said and did it with the passion and the creativity need to transform nations. Host of the Citi Breakfast Show, Bernard Koku Avle, has proposed a strategic structure which he believes when implemented by the country’s leaders, will relieve the ordinary Ghanaian of the myriad of challenges that make life unbearable.

In what he described as the ‘framework for new national discourse’, Mr. Avle, who is also the 2017 Journalist of the year, indicated that the surest way Ghana will make significant developmental strides, is to move away from political divides and focus on these top 10 agenda.

Mr. Avle made the proposals when he delivered a maiden public lecture themed ‘Rethinking the National Conversation’ at the Swiss Spirit Hotel & Alisa Hotel on Tuesday evening.

The proposals among other things centered on areas of transportation, education, health and the canker of deep rooted corruption that continues to bedevil the country.

Here are Bernard’s top 10 agenda that Ghana should tackle

1. Public Transport: Why should any civilized country allow the horrible ‘trotro’ system to continue? Where is the BRT?
2. Public Health: Why do we sink billions of dollars into infrastructure with many of them abandoned making health care still precarious for majority of the population?
3. Quality of Education: Whether free SHS should be the ultimate solution or just the starting point in our conversation about the state of education in the country. Over a third of our basic schools are done without toilet facilities.
4. Growing Urbanization and its challenges: Expensive rent and the lack of housing which leads to a growing rate in crime and social vices. The increasing spate of defilement in our schools and communities.
5. Power Sector: We don’t even know whether dumsor is back or not.
6. Open defecation and poor sanitation: Where are we in the quest to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa?
7. The Cancer of corruption: Whether petty and grand as evidenced in overblown contracts and deliberate tactics to frustrate citizens in getting access to legitimate state services. And even, the difficulties in getting passports, TINs and other things.
8. We also need to also find space to discuss our constitutional arrangement again and set the agenda for a frank and balanced conversation about our identity.
9. We must deliberately seek to highlight things that unite us and avoid over indulging in things that divide us as nation.
10. We must remember the words of the song composed by the great Ghanaian Ephraim Amu ‘Yɛn ara asaase ni’.

Rethinking the National Conversation 

The event, which was in conjunction of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), brought together citizens who are passionate about working to make Ghana a better place to live.

Mr. Avle has received consistent acclaim for his work on the Citi Breakfast Show and emerged as a key influencer of public opinion.

He was at the forefront of critical campaigns against illegal small-scale mining and the reopening of the University of Ghana Medical Centre, which was a placeholder for the general challenges of abandoned health projects.
