Punishment meted out to illegal miners not enough-Operation Vanguard

Commander of the anti galamsey task force, Operation Vanguard Colonel Micheal Amoah ,has attributed the slow pace of prosecution of the illegal miners and their financiers have motivated the illegal miners than deter them from the act.

In a press briefing, the commander disclosed that, out of 983 illegal miners arrested since operation vanguard commenced operation only 95% have been arraigned before court with majority being granted bail.

He added that because the arrested illegal miners have not been punished severely, more natives are encouraged to now revive galamsey activities, especially at night.

In 2017, the former Commander of Operation Vanguard, Colonel William Agyapong also expressed worry about the weight of punishment meted out to illegal miners arrested by the anti-galamsey task-force.

According to him, the sentences given by the judiciary to the suspects were not punitive enough and was a major disincentive to the fight against illegal mining in the country. The anti-galamsey task-force was deployed to three regions; Ashanti, Western and Eastern about five months ago, to help sustain and the fight against illegal mining.
