Galamsey Operators Swerve DCE

SOME ILLEGAL gold miners (galamseyers) managed to flee the mining site where they were operating at dawn Saturday when they got wind that Michael Amoah Awuku, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Atwima Nwabiagya, and police personnel were after them, leaving behind their sophisticated mining equipment.

The illegal miners had blatantly disregarded the government’s ban on galamsey in the country as they had dug deep in river bodies for gold.

Their illegal activities had led to the destruction of river bodies at Kobeng-Nkonteng, near Nkawie in the Atwima Nwabiagya District of the Ashanti Region.

Michael Amoah Awuku, who had been informed about the illegal activities, decided to surprise the miners.

He therefore, organized a taskforce consisting of armed policemen – which he led – and went to the mining site at about 4:00 am on Saturday in an effort to nab the illegal miners right in the act, but to no avail since they knew that was going to happen and had left the site.

Mr Amoah Awuku and his team only found excavators and other machines, and so he pointed out that the equipment would be seized and destroyed, adding that he would continue to flush out the illegal miners from his area.
