Operation Vanguard Rearrest Chinese Illegal Miners On Bail in the same Act.

Operation Vanguards activities on the 09th September 2017 at Abodom in the Bekwai District of the Ashanti Region led to the re-arrest of five Chinese nationals who were arrested earlier on the 06th September 2017 and put before the Bekwai Circuit Court. The five men were granted Court bail, for engaging in Illegal mining at their residence at Abodom on the 6th September 2017. These Chinese gave their names as Huang Shang Gao aged 54, Huang Yang Gang aged 36, Lin Gang Sheng aged 48, Lu Yan Shan aged and Yan Shao Gao aged 35.

The Joint Taskforce personnel together with Police Investigators from Bekwai Divisional Police were on a visit to the scene of a previous operation as part of Investigations. The team on arrival at the Abodom residence where six Chinese were arrested previously found the five men with a new Chinese washing sand in their bedroom. The team upon re-arrest seized quantities of fresh washed sand substance suspected to contain Gold, 50 BB cartridges, and some solid materials suspected to be Gold. A certified Gold Merchant later confirmed the solid metallic substance to be pure Gold which weighed 45.65 grams / 5.7 pounds.

The Five suspects on bail together with the new Chinese who gave his name as Ban Xi Jie aged 37 and the seized items were handed over to Bekwai Divisional Police Headquarters for further Investigation and prosecution.

These foreign Illegal miners after their arrest and granting of Court bail did not show any remorse at all. They went back to commit the same offence by flouting the rules and laws of the country. This should be a source of concern to Ghanaians.

But these Chinese and other nationals including our own brothers and sisters, Ghanaians who are bent destroying our lands and river bodies have the impetus to go back to the illegal activities even when they are on bail because that know that all they will get is a GH¢2,400 fine when they are convicted. So why will they not go ahead with their nefarious activities that is inimical to our very survival as a country.

All patriotic Ghanaians should join the Media, Operation Vanguard and all who are partners in the #StopGalamsey fight to still push our leaders to act. Complacency is setting in and we will all have ourselves to blame if this fight takes too long to win.

On 29th September as the Media Coalition Against Galamsey in conjunction with NCCE with support of our corporate partners including STAR Ghana, will be in Wassa Akropong for a Town Hall meeting. We are calling on all of Ghana to join us put pressure on the Attorney General and his Prosecutors to support Ghana by appealing the Wednesday 07th September 2017 judgment given in Obuasi Circuit Court, presided over by Justice FWK Nawura where those found guilty were convicted to a fine of GH¢ 2,400 each or in default four months in prison In Hard Labour. This is not deterring enough. Check https://www.graphic.com.gh/news/general-news/operation-vanguard-secures-first-conviction.html

#RedFriday on 29th Sept – Join the Fight

Wearing Red on #RedFriday should also let her Ladyship the Chief Justice know that we are not happy with these slap-on-the-wrist fines. She and her judges should support Ghana and the #StopGalamsey fight by ensuring we get convictions that will punish the culprits and deter others from continuing this illegality.

Please wear RED on 29th September as we mark #RedFriday to #StopGalamsey!!
