Ghana celebrates the 1st Anniversary of Komla Dumor’s death with Mass

On Saturday the 17^th of January 2015 Ghana  gathered to celebrate  the 1^st anniversary of the death of Komla Afeke Dumor with a Requiem Mass Mass and Memorial and Thanksgiving service  held at the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Accra.

It’s been a year since the celebrated broadcast journalist, Komla Dumor passed on.

A cross section of the public including the Minister of Communication and his deputy, the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Queen Mother of Aflao, Dzifa Gomashie, Ben Dotse Malor a friend of Komla and the Presidential Spokesperson and Head of Communications at the Presidency of Ghana were were among the Executive arm of government present. Members of Parliament, chiefs, colleague journalists, Ghanaians from all walk of life and the youth whose lives Komla impacted were at the service to mark the day.

7 priests concelebrated the Mass with the Cathedral Administrator as the main celebrant. Rev Fr. Wisdom Laweh delivered the homily at the mass. The Cathedral Choir assisted by the Winneba Youth Choir provided music for the liturgy. Komla’s sister Mawuana Trebor read the 1^st reading and Koshie Dumor were amoung those who said the prayer of the faithful. The widow of Komla Quansema and his 3 children were also present at the Mass.

The late media icon was a former presenter on Joy FM and was the Operations Manager when Kenneth Ashigbey and Stan Dogbe were General Manager and Head of Talk programmes and until his death, he presented “Focus on Africa” programme on the BBC.

He died on Saturday, January 18, 2014 in his London home at the age of 41.

His body was flown home on February 3, 2014 and was buried on Saturday, February 22.

The impact of his death was felt by both Ghanaians and non-Ghanaians due to the unsurpassed mark he made within the short time he worked as a broadcast journalist.

In May 2014, his family launched the Komla Dumor Memorial Foundation in New York aimed at fostering dialogue on issues of development and to reshape the identity of Africa as the new frontier in the world system.
