Togbui Sri warns loose mouth politicians

The Awomefia of the Anlo state, Togbui Sri III, has cautioned politicians not to sacrifice the peace of the nation on the altar of politics come the 2012 elections, by inciting negative passions.

He said the 2012 elections should be another opportunity for Ghana to show the world how far the nation has come in its democratic practices. He warned that posterity will not forgive them if they jeopardise the peace in the country for their parochial political interest.

Speaking to The Globe, on the occasion of a courtesy call on him by Ken Ashigbey, the Managing Director of Graphic Communications Group, Togbui Sri cautioned Ghanaians and politicians particularly, to be circumspect in their pronouncements as they seek to guide the nation politically.

“I’m calling on all Ghanaians, especially the politicians, to handle the 2012 elections with special care and proper understanding of our democratic system so that they don’t bring any unnecessary hardship on Ghanaians,” Togbui Sri advised.

He reiterated his conviction by saying that “Ghana, as we know, is a peace loving country and we all need peace. They should not incite passions during their campaigns and when the election is over whoever wins the elections, his brother or sister must accept so we can live in peace. ”

According to Togbui Sri, having practiced democracy for more than a decade, the nation should be showing maturity, and this should by extension, reflect in the behavior of politicians. He also indicated that once the various political parties educate their members about their intensions, which ultimately is the development of the nation, the inherent dangers of political discourse can be curtailed and that is what the nation must focus on.

“Their utterances should be measured,” Togui Sri said.

Togbui Sri also bemoaned the recent spate of political insults that unfortunately is outlining political discourse in the country, arguing that it is unacceptable.
He called on the nation’s political leaders to stop inciting their supporters against their political opponents, asserting that divergence of views should not be a reason for conflict leading to destruction.

“It has been my worry that politicians are inciting others against their political opponents. I don’t like the way some of them go about their political propaganda. I’m appealing to all of them that they should not incite passions during their campaigns, and make sure that elections are held in a peaceful atmosphere,” Togbui Sri stated.
